Technical SEO checklist

However good your content, technical problems hold your site back. Here are the core technical SEO checks for crawling, speed, structure and security.

Technical SEO checklist

Why is technical SEO fundamental?

Technical SEO helps search engines find, read and index your site easily. One fault in the foundation can hide even your best content. Review the list below at regular intervals.

Crawling and indexing

First, make sure search engines can reach your site:

  • The robots.txt file does not block important pages.
  • The XML sitemap is current and submitted to Google Search Console.
  • Important pages have no accidental noindex tag.
  • Broken links and 404 errors are fixed.
  • Redirect chains are kept short.

Page structure and tags

Each page should introduce itself clearly:

  • Every page has its own title and description.
  • Every page has one meaningful H1 heading.
  • Subheadings follow a logical order.
  • Images use descriptive alt text.
  • Page addresses are short and readable.

Prevent duplicate content

If the same content opens at several addresses, search engines struggle to choose which to show. Differences such as www and non-www, http and https, and trailing slashes should redirect to one address. The canonical tag states the preferred address.

On multilingual sites, hreflang tags show which page is for which language.

Speed, mobile and security

User experience is part of technical SEO too. The site should work smoothly on mobile, load quickly and be served over HTTPS. PageSpeed Insights and Search Console reports point the way.

Add structured data

Structured data tells search engines more clearly what your page is about. It can be used for businesses, services, articles and frequently asked questions. What you add should match the visible page content. You can verify it with Google's Rich Results Test.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I run technical checks?

A quick monthly check and a detailed review after big site changes is a good routine.

Do 404 pages harm a site?

A few 404s are normal. Fix them if important pages or internally linked addresses return 404.

Does a sitemap raise rankings?

Not directly, but it helps search engines find your pages.
