What is Meta Pixel and how do you set it up?

Meta Pixel measures what your ads achieve on your site. Here is what it does, how to set it up and what to keep in mind when you install it.

What is Meta Pixel and how do you set it up?

What is Meta Pixel?

Meta Pixel is a small measurement code added to your website. It measures what people arriving from Facebook or Instagram ads do on your site. Without it, you see that ads bring clicks but cannot clearly see whether they bring enquiries or sales.

What does it do?

When set up correctly, the Pixel helps with:

  • Conversion measurement: Counts actions such as forms, purchases or calls.
  • Campaign optimisation: The system tries to find people likely to act.
  • Remarketing: Lets you reach site visitors again.
  • Similar audiences: Helps you reach people like your existing customers.

How do you set it up?

Setup generally follows these steps:

  • Create a data source in Meta Events Manager.
  • Add the Pixel code to every page of your site.
  • Define events such as form submissions or purchases.
  • Verify with the Meta Pixel Helper extension or a test tool.

You can add the code directly or use a tool such as Google Tag Manager.

Choose the right events

Measuring only page views is not enough. Define the action that matters for your business. For a service firm this is a form submission, and for e-commerce it is a purchase. A thank-you page makes form tracking easier.

Do not skip legal matters

The Pixel sends visitor data to Meta and uses cookie-like technology. Your privacy and cookie policies should be updated, and where required the code should only run after visitor consent. Get support from a legal adviser on this.

Protect data quality

Because of browser restrictions, the Pixel may not capture every action, so server-side options such as the Conversions API can be considered. After setup, compare the data with your real form and sales numbers. If measurement is wrong, ad decisions will be wrong too.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Pixel paid?

No. It is free to use. You only pay for ad spend.

Does the Pixel slow a site?

The effect is usually small, but many tracking codes together can add weight.

Should I install it if I do not run ads?

If you plan ads later, installing early builds audience data. Legal consent requirements still apply.
